Much of lower Michigan faces another night of potentially dangerous weather on Friday, with the National Weather Service warning that tornadoes could develop for a second consecutive night. Parts of metro Detroit are likely to see thunderstorms.
Forecasters expect the strongest storms to move through the region between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Winds of up to 55 mph are possible, along with hail as large as 1 inch in size.
The new threat comes as several counties in West Michigan, mid-Michigan and metro Detroit continue to recover from the severe storm that swept through overnight. That system brought high winds and knocked out power for thousands of residents.
As of Friday morning, outage maps showed roughly 9,000 DTE customers and 185,000 Consumers Energy customers still without electricity. The disparity in numbers underscores how unevenly the damage was spread across the state.
Officials are urging residents to keep a safe distance from any downed power lines, staying at least 20 feet away. They also advise keeping children and pets indoors until hazards have been cleared.
People who spot fallen lines can report them to DTE Energy at 800-477-4747 or to Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.
Several other local developments were also in the news on Friday, May 16, 2025. The Detroit Fire Department is continuing its Summer Safety Series, held on the second Wednesday of each month through August. The sessions cover seasonal fire safety tips, prevention strategies and related topics.
The Coleman A. Young Recreation Center has reopened following a five-year closure and an $11 million renovation. With its return, the city of Detroit now has 13 recreation centers open to the public.
Looking ahead, Movement Festival is set to take over Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26. The event will feature more than 115 local and international techno artists performing across six stages. WDET is an official media partner for the festival.
